This road is a motorcyclist's dream, full of curves and with constantly changing world-class scenery at every bend.
On top of this, there is so much to see for visitors to Dunedin—
New Zealand's only castle, a choice of artists' studios and much more.
KaritaneOld North Road and Coast Road to Karitane.

Another fantastic motorcyclist's road, with stunning vistas of Otago's Pacific coastline which undulates, climbs and dives for a great thrill.
Stop for a coffee at Karitane, stroll along the beach before your return. This road (and beach) is very lightly travelled – you'll feel you have the place to yourself.
PalmerstonPalmerston, Macraes and Middlemarch Loop.

Start with the Old North road ride to Karitane, and continue north to Palmerston. Turn inland towards Dunback, and then to Macraes Flat to view NZ's largest goldmine. Continue to Middlemarch, and from there, on to Dunedin. Highlights include the "big sky" landscapes of tussock grasslands and rock formations, and deserted roads.
Plenty of cafés en-route for refuelling.

Heading south from Dunedin, the rugged, beautiful Southern Coast has many hightlights and options– Nugget Point Lighthouse, Jack's Blowhole, Purukanui Falls, Curio Bay, petrified forest, Hector's Dolphins, coastal native bush, and more.

Southern Scenic Route

– 450km, 2 daysSouthern Scenic Route
This scenic drive runs between Dunedin and Milford Sound. The first stage is as for the Catlins ride (above) and would requires two days to complete. From Invercargill to Te Anau the deserted roads offer a mix of straights and interesting bends. Early Maori rock drawings can be found, and the fishing, surfing town of Riverton.
From Te Anau to Milford is one of the World's most beautiful road routes. Stunning panoramas await — not to be missed.

Central Otago - Queenstown, Wanaka and much more

Day 1: via Pig Route, ride inland visiting Naseby, St Bathans (old goldmining towns), Alexandra, Cromwell, and overnight in Wanaka.
Day 2: head up the Cardrona Valley, over the Crown Range to Queenstown the crown jewel of NZ's tourism scene. Your time and budget will determine your length of stay here. There are several options for the return to Dunedin, so this ride can be extended and modified to suit your requirements.

The Lower South Island

– 1200+km, allow 4 daysWestcoast
This extended trip incorporates the best of the South Island, including alpine passes, East and West coast scenic contrasts, glaciers, stunning river and lake views on lightly trafficked roads tha enhance the whole experience.
Day 1: from Dunedin, head north via the coastal backroads, take the Inland Scenic Route 72 for views of the Southern Alps, then the inland Arthur's Pass route 73. Overnight at Arthur's Pass.
Day 2: starts by crossing the Southern Alps, heading out to the West Coast Highway, turn south. Visit Hokitika, Franz Joseph, Fox Glacier, and Lake Matheson. Overnight at Fox Glacier.
Day 3: continue south to Haast, lunch at Jackson Bay (unforgettable) before crossing the Haast Pass in picture-postcard scenery before a fantastic lakeside blast and Wanaka for the night.
Day 4: over the Crown Range mountain pass, and Queenstown, the crown jewel of New Zealand tourism. Consider spending longer here if possible - so much to see and do. The return to Dunedin has several route options, each about a 3-4 hour ride.
This trip is a serious ride into a stunning part of New Zealand. The weather can change rapidly at any time and it is therefore neccessary to be flexible and allow for travel options.
